Media research (example of a product)


The product follows the conventions by having a boy typically start by being bullied by another boy. He stereotypically gets pushed against a locker and his overall exposed and summited to abuse. It also follows the conventions by having the boys friends abandon him and then eventually come back to help him. However it doesn’t follow the conventions of short bullying clips by having the transitions of scenes have facts and statistics which outline the impact behind bullying.

The target audience is teenagers as the clip is based in a secondary school and follows a teenage boys experience. Furthermore it is for teenagers as it shows stats and facts surrounding the effects of bullying on young people.

The product communicates using colour by having the colour near the start bright then the bullying starts and the colour become a lot darker after 3 months of bullying to represent the feelings and emotions of the boy. Then as the friends come and help him and his mood betters the colour starts to brighten. There is no dialogue. This may have been done t show that bullying doesn’t discriminate and that bullying is everywhere so no matter your accent or where your from bullying can still effect you. The music in the background starts off fairly low then as the boys feelings worsen along with the bullying then the music gets louder. The music is a piano and is ‘sad music’. The costumes are generic and normal. This is also done to show that everyone can be bullied. There again is no voice over for the same reason as no dialogue. The layout of the video is chronological and in order from the start of the bullying. Then how it later escalates. Then this leads to how he got help and felt better with help from his friends.

The key messages within the short clip was that bullying can really effect peoples mood negatively. There is also a message about the links between young peoples suicide rate and bullying. Another key message for the product is that there is help for people who are experiencing thoughts of suicide and are experiencing bullying.

The product is good as anyone who has experienced or are experiencing bullying or people in the future who may experiencing bullying can relate as the products main character is nameless and could be anyone. The product is also good as it raises awareness of the effects of bullying and how it can ruin someones life.

The school has been represented as a negative place as lots of the bullying goes on there. The park has mix between negative and positive as the park is where he was alone but he also returned with his friends.
